I just happended to notice that the soles of my Ecco Berlins were cracked (on both shoes) in the same place, at the inside edge under the ball of my big toes. The crack goes from the inside edge to 3 inches across the sole. I have had the shoes for just over a year and found them very comfortable, but I am a bit concerned that the sole material seems to be of inferior manufacture. The shoes I have are made in China, not sure if that makes a difference. For $175, I expect the lifetime of the shoe and its sole to great than 12 months.

Purchased two pair of Berlin Gore-Tex shoes for my Son to wear on an ecclesiastical service mission to the Manchester, England area. We had the shoe salesmen mention that Ecco's were the best shoes out there for comfort and durability. I paid $170 US for each pair of Berlins with the expectation that this would be money well spent. After four months the sole on one of the shoes has a large crack on the outsole. We called Ecco customer service in the United States and we were told that we needed to send the shoes to them for "inspection for warranty", although we have a picture of the sole. She mentioned that this crack in the sole could be from normal were and tear, Ecco believes you could possibly wear these shoes out in four month, that is confidence in their workmanship and quality! We stated that the shoes are in the UK with our son and it would cost a significant amount to have them sent to the United States and asked if she could give us the information on how to contact Ecco in the UK with regards to an "inspection for warranty" and she told us that she had no information on the UK and that we should go to the UK website. We went to the website for the UK, there is not a phone number but there is an email link. We sent the email and have not received a response after a week. I have noticed a number of websites that mention that the Ecco shoes made in China are not made with the same quality as the older Ecco's or the ones that are made in Europe. I hope that this review will help us to receive a response from Ecco! I hope the Ecco will make this right and honor their warranty. I don't want to have to join the "Ecco Shoes Suck!" group on facebook. I makes me appreciate Fila who honored their warranty when I had a pair of their shoes that started to separate after a few months with only a phone call to explain the problem and a new pair of shoes was in the mail to me. Ecco could learn something about customer service from Fila.

Buyers beware!!!! My first two pairs were wonderful. I have both the Espresso and Rust and they were made in Europe. The new Berlins are Chinese made and the level of quality and feel have diminished significantly.

I am a first time buyer of ECCO shoes, and they will be not the last ones. I bought a pair of this model (BERLIN, colour brandy) in Maadi Grand Mall, Cairo, Egypt, mid March 2008. I admire the casual business, but not old fashion style of this model, great comfort and wonderful material quality. Greetings from Algiers, Algeria, Michael Boebé
