Walkathon in Stavanger

ECCO hosted the first Walkathon of the 2012 season in Stavanger, Norway last Saturday. Market Director Torfinn Kallevik praises both the event and the 40,000 NOK that were raised for children in Tanzania.

The first ECCO Walkathon this year took place in Stavanger in Norway last Saturday: “what a great event and what a nice atmosphere,” several participants said, after experiencing the first ECCO Walkathon ever in Norway.

“I am very satisfied that 632 people at all ages joined the event,” Torfinn Kallevik, Market Director ECCO Norway says and continues: “luckily the sun was shining Saturday and people were excited about walking the beautiful route in the old part of the city. I am quite convinced that the Walkathon strengthens our image as a lifestyle brand and a company that cares about people in need of help.”

The organization ‘SOS Children’s Villages’ was happy to receive the donation of NOK 40,000. The money will be dedicated to children in Mwanza in Tanzania, where a house will be raised.

ECCO Walkathon 2011 in Kolding

Welcome to ECCO Walkathon 2011 in Odense!

We are happy to welcome you to the fourth edition of the ECCO® Walkathon in the city of Odense. This year’s venue is Kongen’s Have park, located in the heart of the city, close to the train station. This is where participants gather, before the walk starts, to enjoy music and live entertainment for both kids and adults.

ECCO Walkathon is all about enjoying a pleasant, active day together with family, friends and colleagues. Every step you take during the Walkathon is for a good cause, as ECCO will donate 7.50 Danish kroner (1 euro) to charity for every kilometer covered.

We look forward to seeing you in Odense for a festive day on September 3!

Charity projects you can support

SOS Children’s Villages’ project in Burundi: last year, ECCO financed the construction of a family house in the SOS children’s village at Cibitoke, providing a caring home and a school education to orphaned children. In 2011, ECCO will contribute to the operating costs of the village.

This year’s WWF project focuses on the preservation of the world’s forests, especially our last tropical rainforests. Tropical deforestation is a big threat to the many forest-dwelling species, among them Asia’a orang-utan populations, and to our planet’s eco-system in general.

The Danish Heart Foundation’s Heart Children’s Fund, Børnehjertefonden, supports children with heart disease and their families. It also finances research with the objective of developing new treatment methods which can save and prolong lives.

Routes

Start and finish at Kastellet
Copenhagen’s historic citadel, Kastellet, is the start and finish area of the ECCO Walkathon. Participants can pick up their Walkathon kits at the registration tents in front of the citadel, starting at 9:30 a.m. In the citadel itself, there will be a stage with live entertainment, the participating charities' information tents and a special children’s area, inviting kids to partake in fun activities. Food and drinks can be bought at the citadel all day.

6 km walk

This year’s 6 km walking route is well-suited for children and boasts a number of activities for kids and their parents. The walk starts at the citadel and passes Sortedamssøen, one of the inner city lakes. It continues through two of the city’s beautiful parks, Østre Anlæg and Rosenborg Castle Gardens/King’s Park, and on to Copenhagen's scenic harbourfront. From there, walkers return to the citadel via Larsens Plads.

10 km walk

This year’s 10 km route starts and ends at Kastellet. From here, the walk will take you to Amalienborg Castle and on to the National Bank building and the old stock exchange. Next, you’ll cross Knippels Bro bridge to the island of Christianshavn. Located south-east of the city centre, Christianshavn is divided from Copenhagen by the inner harbour and from the island of Amager by the city moat. Walking along the island’s historic ramparts, you’ll pass the Panther and Elephant bastions, continuing along the waterfront to the Freetown Christiania. Christiania was founded in 1971 as a hippie community and is today one of Copenhagen’s most famous attractions. There will be entertainment presented by the Christianites, and you can buy refreshments. After the visit to Christiania, the route will take you back across Knippels Bro and then along Copenhagen’s harbourfront towards the finish line at the citadel.

Getting there

Leave your car at home - there are hardly any parking spots near the citadel. Instead, take a train to Østerport station. From there, walking down Grønningen and Esplanaden avenues to the southern entrance of Kastellet takes only ten minutes. Also, buses no. 1A, 15 and 26 take you to Kastellet from downtown, and Copenhagen's two “harbour bus” ferry lines stop nearby at Nordre Toldbod. For further information, visit rejseplanen.dk.

Wheelchairs and prams

Wheelchair users and parents with prams are most welcome to participate in the ECCO Walkathon. Both routes are designed to include everyone. Walkathon stewards will be placed along the route to provide assistance, should you encounter any obstacles.
