2013 Nominees

Julia Mjörnstedt, Sweden

Julia Mjörnstedt is a 27-year old colon-cancer survivor who co-founded “Ung Cancer”, an organization for young people affected by cancer. Ung Cancer aims to create a safe meeting place for cancer-stricken young people, raise general awareness about youth and cancer, make information about cancer easily available, and help improve cancer treatment and aftercare for young adults. If Julia wins she will donate the money to Ung cancer.

Cecilie Beck, Denmark

42-year-old Cecilie is a well-known agenda-setting news reporter. She has been heavily involved in the fight against cancer, and also works as an ambassador for SOS Children's Villages. Her current focus is the Medical Centre in Rutana Burundi, helping people infected with HIV and their families, providing day care, education and medical assistance. The SOS Medical Centre can treat up to 1,000 patients a month. If Cecilie wins she will donate the money to the Medical Centre in Rutana.

Anouk Smulders, The Netherlands

Anouk Smulders is a 38 year old model and TV-presenter with a passion for charity work. She founded the Max4Kids foundation, and is an ambassador for the Ruby and Rose organization creating awareness and raising funds for typical female types of cancer, like ovarian cancer, cervical cancer and uterus cancer. Ovarian cancer is often discovered very late, and of the 1200 Dutch women diagnosed each year, 1000 will die. If Anouk wins, the money will be donated to ovarian cancer research.

 

Aleksandra Ørbeck-Nilssen, Norway

Aleksandra Ørbeck-Nilssen, a 22-year old model and actress, spends her time working with the San people of the Nanofasa Reserve, the aboriginal people of South Africa and one of the oldest cultures in the world. One aspect of the Reach and be reached-project she is involved in is a Gathering and Crafting Academy, where the oldest San women pass on their knowledge to younger women. If Aleksandra wins, she will donate the money protect the San people's way of life.

Malgorzata Kozuchowska, Poland

Malgorzata Kozuchowska top famous film & theatre actress, an admired style icon who fights tirelessly to raise awareness about diseases affecting children. She is a board member of the foundation ”I have a Dream” („Mam marzenie”), helping terminally sick children and young adults between 3 and 18 years old. The foundation has fulfilled dreams of more than 4000 sick children, suffering from diseases like cystic fibrosis, metastatic cancer and AIDS/HIV. If Malgorzata wins she will donate the price I have a dream.

Why we chose these nominees

We nominate remarkable women who have dedicated time and effort to helping others. All of them have shown to be able to feel empathy towards some of the most vulnerable people in the world, and they combine it with the passion and unselfishness needed to truly make a difference for those who need it most. Julia Mjörnstedt Wins the ECCO Walk in Style Award 2013.

ECCO honored Swedish entrepreneur Julia Mjörnstedt during the opening of Copenhagen Fashion Week yesterday, awarding Julia €35,000 for her charity “Ung Cancer” (Young Cancer), which helps young adults with cancer and their families. The event was attended by 280 Danish and international media representatives and many celebrities.
